Shimano Ultegra & Dura-Ace crankset recall

Important safety alert – does your bike need inspecting?

Shimano have issued a safety inspection recall for specific models of crankset. A small number of Ultegra and Dura Ace models are affected. Shimano have asked that you bring affected bikes to your authorised Shimano dealer for inspection and assessment. We are ready and waiting to do this for you as soon as convenient.

Ultegra and Dura-Ace systems are only fitted to higher end road bikes, not to hybrids or mountain bikes.

The affected batches are small numbers of Shimano 11-Speed HOLLOWTECH II Road Cranksets produced between June 1, 2012, up to and including June 30, 2019.

What is the issue?

Some bonding separation has occurred in low numbers of the cranksets. As part of Shimano’s safety commitment they are conducting a wide-scale inspection programme. In reality the numbers of affected cranksets are likely to be very low.

What you need to do if you think you could be affected:

Firstly, identify the model number of your crankset. The affected products are DURA-ACE and ULTEGRA branded cranksets with the following model numbers:

ULTEGRA FC-6800, FC-R8000 and DURA-ACE FC-9000, FC-R9100 and FC-R9100-P

The model numbers are stamped on the inside of the left hand crank arm near the bottom of the arm where the pedal is attached (see yellow square).

If your model number does not match one of the codes above, your crankset is not affected and no further action is needed.

If your model code does match one of the codes above, now check if it has one of the following manufacturing codes below (see blue square in picture).

KF, KG, KH, KI, KJ, KK, KL, LA, LB, LC, LD, LE, LF, LG, LH, LI, LJ, LK, LL, MA, MB, MC, MD, ME, MF, MG, MH, MI, MJ, MK, ML, NA, NB, NC, ND, NE, NF, NG, NH, NI, NJ, NK, NL, OA, OB, OC, OD, OE, OF, OG, OH, OI, OJ, OK, OL, PA, PB, PC, PD, PE, PF, PG, PH, PI, PJ, PK, PL, QA, QB, QC, QD, QE, QF, QG, QH, QI, QJ, QK, QL, RA, RB, RC, RD, RE, and RF.

If your manufacturing code does not match,  then your crankset is not affected.  No further action is required.
If it does match one of them, then call the Red Kite Cycles workshop on 0121 745 2618 and book in for an inspection.

Inspections are free of charge and take around 20 minutes. You may be able to wait while we do this*. You are welcome to have a cup of coffee or tea.

* Inspection will be quicker if your crankset is clean.

If you aren’t sure if your bike needs an inspection, give us a call and we’ll advise you.
