Upgrading your current bike

Your bike should fit like a favourite pair of shoes … and should be focused on how you ride it

As bikes come standard out of boxes they are sized for norms and averages. This still means that very serious research and development has been put in by the manufacturers and bike designers to create a bike that will fit people well in a given height range, providing them with a generally good fit. But what if you are looking for something else in your bike-fit? Each of us is unique in posture, flexibility and limb length – and we may just require a tweak or two to the shape and balance of our bike and riding position.

Equally importantly, each of us has a different ‘engine’ in us, a different level of fitness, and may be heading for tougher terrain than the local roads and lanes. For such cases it might be more about adapting gearing and seeking efficiency out of your bike. Bikes are more adaptable than they initially appear and this is where we come in with our specialist experience and knowledge. See us in the shop for free consultation on moving your current bike to the next level. We have great experience in fettling road, hybrid and MTB bikes for our customers – we have clear ideas on evolution of you and your bike.

Bikes evolve with their riders, making both small tweaks and giant leaps:

  • See us for bike-fit advice – we advise on power, comfort and efficiency. See the following page for details of bike fit service.
  • Upgrade your “touch points” with new bars and a stem, pedals or a saddle – a perfect perch and reach is essential.
  • Add electronic shifting – those who try it love it. We supply genuine import, fully UK warrantied and installed systems and offer free installation on electric shifting… because we love it.
  • Have the right gear range for who you are and for the road you are riding. Don’t struggle up hills or run out of gears when hammering along the flat. We can tweak drivetrains to make your ride right.
  • A frame swap will improve the heart and soul of your cycling experience – this is the centrepiece of your cycling and will dictate handling, feel and comfort. A swap can be cheaper than a whole new bike, whilst also allowing you the opportunity to perhaps combine it with a fitting session and a few other upgrades.
  • Groupset swaps – we have a certified and trained workshop team to complete Shimano, Campagnolo and SRAM groupset swaps so you can rely on years of technical experience. Equally, changing your groupset offers a chance to consult with us on gear ranges, crank lengths and other related areas.
  • Wheels and tyres change everything – talk to us. Rotating mass is the most important weight on a bike; understanding wheel stiffness and lightness is integral to getting the most out of your time on a bike. An easy upgrade for efficiency or comfort. Climb, tour or just bowl along – we have specialist choices.
  • Cycling intelligence (GPS, computers, cameras, etc) can enhance your riding by providing a record of not just where you’ve been, but also how fast, at what heart rate, power, cadence (that’s your pedal revolutions) and altitude (in terms of metres of climbing on your ride). It’s the 21st Century – get some electronics!

Our view of a cyclist is not just someone who buys a bike and rides off into the sunset. We believe that people’s needs and ambitions on a bike change – and we can provide the advice and experience to help you make progress. Call to arrange an appointment if you want to speak with us in detail, or just drop in to the shop to see first hand what we can do for riders.

CUSTOM BUILDS – As the relationship between rider and bike develops into one that can consume many hours, then there is much to be said for complete tailoring of a bike to yourself. The ultimate way to do this is with a custom build bike – we do this with Trek’s Project One programme, with Specialized’s S-Works, with Condor and Enigma and also with Storck. Each of these bike builds comes tailored in the finest detail with respect to gearing, fit, frame technology, wheels choices, aesthetic style and more. Effectively each custom build bike comes with bike-fit, rider consultation and a personalised service that focuses our knowledge onto your riding. And your bike will be unique to you of course.

Cycle to work scheme

A tax free bike and accessories . . . where do I sign?!

At Red Kite we are great supporters of the government’s Cycle to Work scheme and have supplied many customers with bikes through this excellent initiative. If you’re not familiar with Cycle to Work, take it from us, it really is a win, win situation! You save up to 42% on a bicycle and safety accessories and your employer reduces their carbon footprint and helps you to be a healthier worker.

In financial terms, Cycle to Work is a salary sacrifice scheme. In other words the cost of the bike and accessories comes out of your wages before tax and National Insurance is deducted. Depending on how much tax you pay, this allows you to save between 25% and 42% on the cost of your bike. If you are self-employed and paid through PAYE, speak to your accountant who will be able to advise you on how you can access the scheme.

Here’s a video from Cyclescheme to explain the process

Red Kite currently offers bikes through the following schemes:

  • Cyclescheme
  • Cycle2Work (Halfords)
  • Connected Benefits
  • Cycle Solutions
  • The Salary Exchange Ltd
  • Enjoy Benefits
  • Cycleplus
  • Bike 2 Work

If your employer’s scheme is not one of these, please contact us via phone or email as we may be able to register and supply you with a bike.

Remember the total saving you can make depends on the specific scheme you are registered with and your level of salary and tax status.

Please be aware we may charge a small one-off administration fee for some of these schemes.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to buying a bicycle through the scheme:

  • Find out which scheme your employer supports.  If your employer doesn’t offer one – persuade them to!
  • Come see us in the shop and discuss the kind of bike you would like and the accessories you need to go with it.
  • We will supply you with a quote. To speed things up we will take a refundable deposit to activate your order.
  • Submit your quote to your employers’ scheme
  • When your quote is approved, you will receive a certificate or a voucher. When you’ve got this – give us a call and we will build your bike.
  • When your bike is ready, come in and collect it, bringing with you the certificate or voucher.
  • Take your new bike home and enjoy some fun riding!

Bike Box Hire

Stress free travelling with your bike

image1 4If you love your bike, it is more than likely that one day you will want to take it on your travels with you – be that on a family holiday or a group riding trip. But putting your bike unprotected in the hold of a plane is not the wisest plan if you want to ensure it arrives damage free. The answer is to hire a bike box from us.

Hiring a bike box ensures your pride and joy reaches its destination safe and sound. There are no rented bikes to ruin your planned riding because they do not quite fit, and also it allows you to keep that bond between yourself, your bike and your riding experiences.

We charge for this service by the day (or part day) to ensure that you get maximum flexibility… you can book for a day or two up to three weeks and more if that is what you need. We book out standard sized boxes for “normal” bikes, whilst also having one Brompton bike hire case available – this little beauty will transform your business trip, city break or family holiday.

Hire rate is £7.50 per day (or part of a day – as we can’t rent it out to someone else that same day). If we don’t already know you well, a deposit is charged of £100 and you will need to provide ID.

If you want us to pack the bike for you we are happy to help. There is a discretionary charge for this of £12.50 to cover time.

Red Kite has three Polaris Bike Pod Pro boxes available for hire as well as a Brompton travel case.

Our Bike Pod Pros:

  • Are fully rigid moulded cases made from polypropylene
  • Are suitable for both road and mountain bikes
  • Allow bike wheels to lock into position using tie wraps
  • Have foam padding inside to protect the bike
  • Are easy to manoeuvre on castor wheels
